Smoke detectors are an important part of safety in a home, as these fire-protection devices will automatically detect and warn you of the presence of smoke and can save your life in the event of a fire.
A Knox Box is a secure key safe that mounts on the wall of a building. The only keys available to open the box are in the possession of the Fire Department. When there is a fire alarm or a fire, the Fire Department can access the key safe and use the building keys to enter the building rather than breaking into the building. This is particularly beneficial for incidents involving water flows or automatic alarms where there may not be an actual fire or the fire may be already extinguished.
More than 9,000 departments nationwide, including the Porter Fire Department, use Knox-Box® key boxes, vaults, Haz-Mat cabinets, key switches, locking FDC caps, and padlocks.
Property owners in the community can store entrance keys, access cards and floor plans in high-security Knox-Box® key boxes mounted near their building entrances.
Each Knox-Box purchased by the property owner is keyed to a single master key controlled by your local fire department. The Knox-Box Rapid Entry System reduces response time, property damage and the liability for lost keys.
Porter Fire Department offers regular CPR classes on the 1st Tuesday of every month. To register for a class or learn more about CPR, please visit our dedicated CPR Class Page.

Where to begin after a fire...
Recovering from a fire can be a physically and mentally draining process. Typically, the hardest part is knowing where to begin and who to contact.
Recognizing this hardship at a national level, the United States Fire Administration and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) developed a guide - “After the Fire, Returning to Normal” - that provides valuable information to the home or business owner who suffers a fire loss.
Porter Fire Department enjoys attending community events and teaching the community about fire safety. When attending your event, visitors will be able to meet the firefighters, have a hands-on experience with a fire vehicle, and learn about firefighting tools.
Availability is not guaranteed, and attendance is subject to the weather. If you have an all-day or several-hour event, the fire department may not be able to attend the event for the entire time. Fire Crews will remain in service during the event and may need to respond to an emergency.
It is recommended that community events be scheduled at least 4 weeks in advance, although requests can be made at any time. This allows our firefighters to incorporate the visits into their daily inspection and training schedules.
SPACE NEEDED FOR APPARATUS:
- Fire Engine: 40 feet by 30 feet
- Ladder Truck: 60 feet by 30 feet
